Safety first
Your safety matters.
There for You is designed to reduce scams, financial exploitation, harassment and inappropriate behavior.
Every safety feature
Who's here
- Every member's ID is checked by
, an independent ID verification company (switched off during the friends and family beta).
- Their first name and age group must match the ID, and their profile photo must be the same person.
- One ID can only have one account. Someone removed for safety can't come back with a new email.
- Profile photos are taken live with the member's own camera. No uploads, so no borrowed or old photos.
- Members 70 and older without photo ID have their own checks, with their own label: “✓ Details checked” or “✓ Family checked”. You choose which kinds of members you'd like to meet.
- Everyone agrees when they join that There for You is for friendship, not dating.
Meeting people
- Introductions one at a time, chosen for you: up to 3 in your first week, then one every 4 days. No searching or browsing.
- You only connect when you both say yes.
- A woman and a man are only introduced when they're close in age, to reduce the risk of romance scams.
Messages
- Messages asking for money, gift cards, bank or card details, a Social Security number or passwords are stopped before they're sent.
- Messages pushing secrecy or urgency come with a warning.
- Phone numbers, email addresses, links and other apps are held back until you've had 3 video calls together, or one with Family&Friends.
- Romantic wording gets a friendly reminder, and our team may take a look.
Video calls
- Face to face, so you can see who you're talking to.
- Calls are encrypted and go through a relay, so nobody sees your internet address.
- Their profile photo shows in the corner, so you can check it's the same face.
- On-device Safety recording: every call is recorded, and the last 15 minutes stay locked and encrypted on your own device, in case someone reports the call.
- Choose who can ring you, and set quiet hours (9pm to 8am to start).
- Leave any call with one tap.
If something goes wrong
- Block or report is on every person's card, right after a call, and under Previous connections for a few days after a connection ends.
- Blocking is instant. Reporting also blocks, and our team reviews every report.
- Someone you report can no longer see your photo.
- Two reports of asking for money or romantic advances from different people pause that person while our team takes a look.
Your account
- Sign in with a passkey or an emailed code, and turn on two-step sign-in in Settings.
- Let your Family&Friends look out for you: they see who you're connected with, never your messages.
- Staff only read messages in a reported conversation, and every look is logged.
See also Your privacy below.
What the ID check confirms
- The ID is real, and the person holding it is the person taking the selfie.
- Their first name and age group match the ID. If someone likes another name, it shows as “Likes to be called” under their real first name.
- Their profile photo is the same person as the ID.
- One ID can only have one account.
- On a video call, their profile photo shows in the corner, so you can see it's the same face. If it isn't, tap Block or report after the call and choose “Doesn't look like their photo”.
- We keep only these yes or no answers, never the ID itself or the selfie video from the check.
Blocking and reporting
After a call, you land on that person's card. Tap Block or report. The same button is on their card on your dashboard, and under Previous connections for a few days after a connection ends. Blocking is instant: they can't contact you, and we won't introduce you again. Reporting also blocks them, and our team takes a look.
On-device Safety recording
What it is
Every video call is recorded, one-to-one and group calls alike. Your phone or computer keeps a recording of the last 15 minutes of the call, with everyone in it. It's small and low quality on purpose: enough to see and hear what happened, nothing more.
How you know it's on
We tell you about it and ask you to agree before your first video call, and again if anything about it changes. When a call connects, a short note says "On-device safety recording is on." and then fades away.
Which calls
On every video call, group calls too. It's part of how we keep everyone safe, so it can't be turned off.
Where it's kept
Only on the phone or computer you used for the call. It's locked and encrypted as it records, so no one can view it, not even you or anyone else on the call, even if a device is stolen. It's saved every few seconds, so it keeps going right up to the end, even if the page closes or the phone switches off. Each recording is deleted after 3 days (at most your last 20 calls). Nothing is sent to us unless someone reports the call.
Who can see it
Only our admins, and only if someone on the call chooses to send the recording with a report. Then an admin can unlock and review it. When you report a call, you pick Report and send my recording or Report without the recording. If someone reports you, our team may ask you for yours, so both sides are heard. Everyone else on the call is told when a recording is shared. Every time an admin opens one, it's logged.
Reporting from the right device
Your recording stays on the phone or computer the call was on, so report from that one. Under Previous connections, each person shows which device your last call used. If you report from somewhere else, or your recording is gone, you can still report, and we ask the other person's device for its copy.
How our team decides
Our team removes someone over a call only after seeing a recording of what happened. Without one, they can warn the person or pause their introductions. If someone's reports keep turning out to be false, their reports stop counting toward pausing anyone automatically, and our team may suspend or close their account.
How long we keep a shared recording
We delete it when the report is closed. The law sometimes makes us keep one longer: after a court order or legal request about that report, or when we report harm to a child to the national child safety hotline, which the law says to keep for a year.
When we'd share it outside our team
Only when the law requires it, for example a court order, to report harm to a child, or in an emergency where someone may be seriously hurt. Never for advertising, and never to other members.
People nearby
Anyone near you on camera or within earshot may be recorded too. Please tell them. The recording only covers what your camera and microphone pick up during the call.
Agreeing to it
Safety recording is part of every video call, so we ask you to agree before your first one, and again if these words change. Without your agreement, you can still send messages, but you can't join video calls.
Your privacy
Your profile isn't public
Search engines and visitors can't see you. Your photo and profile are seen only by your connections and the few members we introduce you to.
Family&Friends only
In Settings, under Privacy, you can choose Family&Friends only: no introductions, and only people you invited or are already connected with can see you and call you.
Take a break
Pause introductions and hide your profile from new people whenever you like. Everyone you already know stays.
What others see about you
Other members see your age group, never your birthday, and never where you live. Whether you're a woman or a man and where you are in life are used only to pick introductions, and aren't shown.
Reporting hides you
If you report someone, they can no longer see your photo.
We don't keep your ID
The ID check is done on 's secure pages. We keep only yes or no answers, plus a one-way code so one ID can only have one account. We never keep your ID, the selfie video from the ID check, any face scan, your birth date or your Social Security number. Your profile photo is the one picture we keep, so the people you meet can see who you are.
Your calls are private
Video calls are encrypted from your device to the other person's, and pass through a relay so nobody sees your internet address. Safety recording stays on your own device unless someone reports a call.
Our team respects your messages
Staff don't read your private messages, except in a conversation someone has reported. Every time staff open an account, a reported conversation or a recording, it's logged.
Family look-out is your choice
If you turn on Family&Friends can look out for me, they see who you're connected with and when you last had a video call. Never your messages or your calls.
You're in charge of your information
In Settings you can download your information, see and withdraw what you've agreed to, or close your account. If your record is clean, closing deletes your account.
